Psychotherapist
MICHAEL GOLDMAN, LCSW

Anxious? Depressed? Lack of motivation?

Do you question your life's purpose? What brings you joy and why achieving it is such a struggle? Are your relationships always a challenge? Do you find yourself repeating patterns that don't work, including around alcohol and substance use? Are you sick and tired of being sick and tired?

What I Do

I am a licensed clinical social worker, in New York & Florida skilled in working with adults who struggle with mood disorders and addiction. I work with individuals & couples; welcoming members of diverse communities. Additionally, my previous 15 year work experience with the FDNY's employee assistance program, allows me to help those struggling with trauma. I use an eclectic insight oriented approach using both relational & cognitive-behavioral theory. I believe the most important aspect of therapy is the relationship forged by client and therapist and I provide a nonjudgmental and safe environment in which we can explore and solve issues collaboratively.

I have been engaging with clients over 20 years, in an open conversational manner to assist them in identifying and addressing the source of these concerns, to decrease their symptoms, and if necessary relapse prevention, so they can get more joy out of life and get more fuller or meaningful relationships

Areas of Practice

Individual psychotherapy

One on one therapy sessions can help you identify patterns and behaviors that are causing conflict and identify ways to change and grow.

Adults/Couples

We all have a past that paved the road for who we are today. The way we have responded to those early events and relationships colors how we navigate the world today, both good and bad. Therapy can help you enhance what works and figure out how to change what does not.

CBT (Cognitive Behavioral Therapy)

is a treatment that was originally designed to treat patients with depression but has since been shown to be very effective for treating many different conditions: Anxiety Disorders, including generalized anxiety disorder, panic disorder, specific phobia, and social anxiety disorder.

REBT (Rational Emotive Behavior Therapy)

is a therapy approach that focuses on managing irrational or unhealthy thoughts, emotions, and behaviors. In contrast to more passive talk therapy, REBT focuses on actions

Trauma

Every person will have to confront trauma at one point in their life, whether it be a big T major trauma or a little t incident. Traumas impact our thinking and behaviors, our mind and our central nervous systems, in very specific ways. Therapy can help you understand how trauma has affected you and give you a road map for healing.

Bereavement

We all experience loss in life and have to figure out how to cope and continue on. There is no formula for navigating the grief process, and everyone grieves differently. Therapy gives you a place to put your heavy feelings, encourages you to allow yourself to feel, and provides support as you figure out how to live without your loved one.

Michael is a compassionate and caring therapist. I always found him to be very active in our sessions. He gave feedback on a consistent basis and had appropriate valuable suggestions which helped me make good decisions for my recovery. Other therapists I have seen in the past would just listen and "yes" me! This is not Michael's approach. He was provactive in the best sense and asked me challenging questions. Eventually, this enabled me to ask those questions for myself
